Apple files facial recognition patent for iDevices

The United States Patent and Trademark Office published a patent application by Apple which could bring an interesting feature of the Android ICS to iOS devices, Facial Recognition.

According to the description of the patent, the technology uses face detection to unlock iOS devices. Although a similar feature is already available on Android ICS, it is criticized for being flawed and can be easily deceived. The patent application says it uses existing photos from phone’s database to calculate distance between user’s eyes, nose and lips which s used for facial recognition. The fact that Apple’s technology relies on 2D images makes it susceptible to similar tricks as on ICS, like using the photo of device owner to unlock the device.

The technology is currently only in its patent stage and may undergo various improvements before it shows up on iOS devices.
